In Obedience to the Sun

(from Writer’s Digest Poetry Prompts : Write a service poem…)

The flowers served their master

Who paid them in extravagant jewels and gold;

For their petals were truly exquisite

And their leaves delicate to behold;

The master was the sunlight,

He reigned over all beings on that planet.

The sparkling jewelry was worn by the roses

To enhance their immense beauty;

The poppies would use the glittering gold nuggets

To purchase charming gowns and other lovely things;

One day Master Sunlight vanished,

No one knew why his great light dimmed;

Soon after, the flowers wilted

While fertile lands dried to dust,

Then strong winds blew through the valley,

And the whole planet was dark;

Now strange creatures came out at nighttime

To play shiny flutes and fine violins;

This caused Master Sunlight to burst forth

With sparkling rays of a golden hue;

Quickly, the odd creatures hid underground

As all of the flowers decided to bloom.
